Based on what emerges from the IX Report on the social com\u00admit\u00adment of com\u00adpa\u00adnies in Italy<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, pro\u00admot\u00aded by Osser\u00adva\u00adto\u00adrio Socialis<\/strong><\/a>, Ital\u00adian com\u00adpa\u00adnies have invest\u00aded in 2019 the fig\u00adure of 1.771 bil\u00adlion<\/strong> in shares of Cor\u00adpo\u00adrate Social Respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty and Sus\u00adtain\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty, with an increase of 25% com\u00adpared to 2017, and to invest was 92% of com\u00adpa\u00adnies with over 80 employ\u00adees.
\nThese num\u00adbers bear wit\u00adness to the increase in aware\u00adness<\/strong> of these issues, which, due to the sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant cor\u00adre\u00adla\u00adtion it main\u00adtains with strate\u00adgic choic\u00ades, are increas\u00ading\u00adly on the tables of deci\u00adsion mak\u00aders in the com\u00adpa\u00adny.<\/p>\n

We at Glas\u00adford Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Italy, in the light of the con\u00adsult\u00ading exper\u00adtise gained over the years along\u00adside entre\u00adpre\u00adneurs, man\u00adagers and heads of com\u00adpa\u00adnies, we are par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly atten\u00adtive in cul\u00adti\u00advat\u00ading reflec\u00adtions and dis\u00adcus\u00adsion on issues that we con\u00adsid\u00ader deci\u00adsive for the val\u00adue cre\u00adation for the busi\u00adness sys\u00adtem. One of these is the sus\u00adtain\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty and we have decid\u00aded to talk about it from one of the more impor\u00adtant points of obser\u00adva\u00adtion: the Logis\u00adtics and the Trans\u00adports<\/strong> in which we oper\u00adate through man\u00addates of Exec\u00adu\u00adtive Search<\/strong> since more than twen\u00adty years in the sign of cross-fer\u00adtil\u00adiza\u00adtion and co-design.
\nOur Asso\u00adciate Part\u00adner Andrea Laman\u00adna<\/strong><\/a> inter\u00adviewed Daniele Testi<\/strong><\/a>, Pres\u00adi\u00addent of SOS-Logis\u00adti\u00adca<\/strong><\/a>, and Gian\u00adfran\u00adco Coc\u00adchi<\/strong><\/a>, HR Direc\u00adtor of Stef Italia<\/strong><\/a>, with the aim to bet\u00adter inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00ading what it means for a com\u00adpa\u00adny to under\u00adtake into account ESG issues and what impact and oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties they gen\u00ader\u00adate for their busi\u00adness and orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion\u00adal front.<\/p>\n

AL<\/strong>: Ing. Testi, what does it mean for a com\u00adpa\u00adny that oper\u00adates in logis\u00adtics today to invest in terms of sus\u00adtain\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty? How many are the dec\u00adli\u00adna\u00adtions of sus\u00adtain\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty?
\nDT<\/strong>: The theme of sus\u00adtain\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty for a long time has been addressed by logis\u00adtics oper\u00ada\u00adtors as a pure\u00adly envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal and eco\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal aspect. Improv\u00ading its envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal per\u00adfor\u00admance meant invest\u00ading in new tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies (means and infra\u00adstruc\u00adture), with out\u00adlays that are not com\u00adpat\u00adi\u00adble with the aver\u00adage size of oper\u00ada\u00adtors and with the cost pres\u00adsures to which the sec\u00adtor has always been sub\u00adject\u00aded. Only recent\u00adly, and thanks to some ini\u00adtia\u00adtives such as those of the UN 2030 Agen\u00adda, has begun to decline sus\u00adtain\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty on the dif\u00adfer\u00adent axes<\/strong> includ\u00ading the issues of social respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty and eco\u00adnom\u00adic sus\u00adtain\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty. This, albeit slow\u00adly, is con\u00adtribut\u00ading to a trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion of the sys\u00adtem and final\u00adly sus\u00adtain\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty is per\u00adceived as a lever to inno\u00advate<\/strong> and be more effi\u00adcient, resilient and com\u00adpet\u00adi\u00adtive. Briefly, we look not only at the costs to improve our envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal per\u00adfor\u00admance but also at all the advan\u00adtages that derive from it on the mar\u00adket in terms of cus\u00adtomer loy\u00adal\u00adty, dif\u00adfer\u00aden\u00adti\u00ada\u00adtion of the offer and risk mit\u00adi\u00adga\u00adtion. In this equa\u00adtion, accord\u00ading to SOS-Logis\u00adtics, the asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion for sus\u00adtain\u00adable logis\u00adtics, born in Italy in 2005, enter two fur\u00adther vari\u00adables:
\n1) poli\u00adcies, which will increas\u00ading\u00adly reward vir\u00adtu\u00adous prac\u00adtices with regard to finan\u00adcial sup\u00adport and oper\u00ada\u00adtional and set\u00adtle\u00adment rules;
\n2) con\u00adsumers or ulti\u00admate ben\u00ade\u00adfi\u00adcia\u00adries of logis\u00adtics and trans\u00adport ser\u00advices who will increas\u00ading\u00adly require guar\u00adan\u00adtees on the envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal, eco\u00adnom\u00adic and social impact of prod\u00aducts pur\u00adchased through\u00adout the life cycle or from pro\u00adduc\u00adtion to disposal\/recycling.<\/p>\n

AL<\/strong>: It seems to emerge clear\u00adly from its analy\u00adsis that sus\u00adtain\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty increas\u00ading\u00adly meets the strate\u00adgic objec\u00adtives of the com\u00adpa\u00adny that oper\u00adates in logis\u00adtics, ori\u00adent choic\u00ades, cre\u00adate oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties\u2026 What impact does this have on the busi\u00adness mod\u00adels of these com\u00adpa\u00adnies?
\nDT<\/strong>: Yes, I con\u00adfirm. Final\u00adly, these issues begin to per\u00adme\u00adate the devel\u00adop\u00adment of busi\u00adness mod\u00adels, ori\u00adent\u00ading them towards a more cir\u00adcu\u00adlar and less lin\u00adear econ\u00ado\u00admy. In this new con\u00adtext the oper\u00ada\u00adtors of the logis\u00adtics are called to devel\u00adop new com\u00adpe\u00adtences<\/strong> and a cul\u00adture of base more sys\u00adtemic that is able to bring out the val\u00adue of the logis\u00adtics and not only the costs and a more sys\u00adtemic basic cul\u00adture that is able to bring out the val\u00adue of logis\u00adtics and not just costs. The tools are there and can derive from exter\u00adnal ini\u00adtia\u00adtives such as all the reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtions relat\u00aded to Qual\u00adi\u00adty, Safe\u00adty and Envi\u00adron\u00adment or the cer\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion of Ben\u00ade\u00adfit Com\u00adpa\u00adny that is based on regen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtive busi\u00adness mod\u00adels. Oth\u00ader tools have been con\u00adceived through a ver\u00adti\u00adcal indus\u00adtry expe\u00adri\u00adence, such as the sus\u00adtain\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty rat\u00ading devel\u00adoped by SOS-Logis\u00adti\u00adca.
\nIn sum\u00adma\u00adry, it can be said that the col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion between the dif\u00adfer\u00adent inter\u00adlocu\u00adtors of the val\u00adue chain, the objec\u00adti\u00adva\u00adtion on the results and met\u00adrics shared, togeth\u00ader with the invest\u00adment on new skills, are the key tools behind the devel\u00adop\u00adment of sus\u00adtain\u00adable logis\u00adtics busi\u00adness.<\/p>\n

AL<\/strong>: Mr. Coc\u00adchi, with Mr. Testi we have under\u00adtak\u00aden the explo\u00adration of ESG issues start\u00ading from the strate\u00adgic agen\u00adda and the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties that this evo\u00adlu\u00adtion is deter\u00admin\u00ading on the busi\u00adness front. In your view, what impact do these issues have on orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions?
\nGC<\/strong>: The pan\u00addem\u00adic has accel\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded the need for inno\u00adva\u00adtion and the desire of the entire orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion to par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpate con\u00adscious\u00adly in the cur\u00adrent change, thus reduc\u00ading its resis\u00adtance. Becom\u00ading a sus\u00adtain\u00adable com\u00adpa\u00adny, espe\u00adcial\u00adly in our sec\u00adtor, implies first of all a dif\u00adfer\u00adent cul\u00adtur\u00adal approach, a change of men\u00adtal\u00adi\u00adty and per\u00adspec\u00adtives that can be real\u00adized only if to sup\u00adport all this there is a strong com\u00admit\u00adment<\/strong>, a strong com\u00admit\u00adment and strate\u00adgic vision on the part of the Gen\u00ader\u00adal Man\u00adage\u00adment, first and fore\u00admost, and the Steer\u00ading Com\u00admit\u00adtee, propos\u00ading new ideas and solu\u00adtions, shar\u00ading a process that involves the entire orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion and rela\u00adtion\u00adships between peo\u00adple. This has allowed us to reduce the resis\u00adtance to change and feed the flow of inno\u00adva\u00adtion with\u00adin the com\u00adpa\u00adny. This spec\u00adi\u00adfied, the orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion\u00adal impacts can have an echo in two dif\u00adfer\u00adent direc\u00adtions: in the def\u00adi\u00adn\u00adi\u00adtion of new pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty and in new modal\u00adi\u00adties of work\u00ading and pro\u00adce\u00addures ori\u00adent\u00aded to the respect of the envi\u00adron\u00adment (paper\u00adless, waste mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal recov\u00adery, work\u00ading tools with low eco\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal impact, new real estate approach\u00ades, \u2026)<\/p>\n

AL<\/strong>: Also Mr. Testi men\u00adtioned the birth of new skills with\u00adin this sec\u00adtor and in rela\u00adtion to emerg\u00ading issues. Which pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal skills are most sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant in your sec\u00adtor?
\nGC<\/strong>: Con\u00adtrolled tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adture food trans\u00adport and logis\u00adtics, a mar\u00adket that sees us as pro\u00adtag\u00ado\u00adnists, is expe\u00adri\u00adenc\u00ading a sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant and last\u00ading change that we can also read in the impact that new tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies have in cre\u00adat\u00ading val\u00adue through the pro\u00adtec\u00adtion of peo\u00adple and the envi\u00adron\u00adment. An exam\u00adple of this we read in the evo\u00adlu\u00adtion of the roles of the Ener\u00adgy Man\u00adag\u00ader<\/strong> and the Envi\u00adron\u00adment Man\u00adag\u00ader<\/strong> who, in a mar\u00adket and in chang\u00ading pro\u00adduc\u00adtion con\u00adtexts, are con\u00adcrete wit\u00adness\u00ades of this tran\u00adsi\u00adtion through their man\u00addate. It is no longer enough to \u201cdefend\u201d the com\u00adpa\u00adny from envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal risks. They are required to opti\u00admize process\u00ades, intro\u00adduc\u00ading new tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies to reduce envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal impact and ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adtion. The Ener\u00adgy Man\u00adag\u00ader, first of all, is respon\u00adsi\u00adble for the Ener\u00adgy bud\u00adget that allows to under\u00adstand the real ener\u00adgy needs of the com\u00adpa\u00adny and to pro\u00adpose strate\u00adgies to reduce costs and con\u00adsump\u00adtion of the com\u00adpa\u00adny effec\u00adtive\u00adly with projects rang\u00ading from the imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion and expan\u00adsion of the cap\u00adil\u00adlary mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading sys\u00adtem of ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adtion, up to fea\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty stud\u00adies for inter\u00adven\u00adtions and new projects of Ener\u00adgy Effi\u00adcien\u00adcy and sub\u00adse\u00adquent report\u00ading of sav\u00adings obtained, with a con\u00adse\u00adquent impact on the income state\u00adment of the com\u00adpa\u00adny.<\/p>\n

AL<\/strong>: Thank you Mr. Coc\u00adchi. From the priv\u00adi\u00adleged point of view from which we observe the labour mar\u00adket, I can say that the pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal fam\u00adi\u00adly with\u00adin which both the roles you men\u00adtioned oper\u00adate is becom\u00ading increas\u00ading\u00adly vis\u00adi\u00adble and sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant: HSE Man\u00adage\u00adment is increas\u00ading\u00adly a direct report\u00ading func\u00adtion to the CEO and in some cas\u00ades sits with\u00adin the Man\u00adage\u00adment Team to the extent that the analy\u00adses and fore\u00adcasts that arise from its obser\u00adva\u00adtion point become cru\u00adcial for deter\u00admine busi\u00adness choic\u00ades and, con\u00adse\u00adquent\u00adly, the orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion\u00adal ones. I would add, among the roles, the CSR Man\u00adag\u00ader<\/strong>, a posi\u00adtion, born in the Unit\u00aded States already in the \u201950s but now increas\u00ading\u00adly sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant with\u00adin Euro\u00adpean com\u00adpa\u00adnies and in our coun\u00adtry. This is demon\u00adstrat\u00aded by the fact that 35% of Ital\u00adian CSR Man\u00adagers have a direct report line with the CEO and 44% have only one inter\u00adme\u00addi\u00adary towards the heads of the com\u00adpa\u00adny and is a posi\u00adtion that grows both in numer\u00adi\u00adcal terms and in terms of spe\u00adcif\u00adic skills. If the first pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal fam\u00adi\u00adly orig\u00adi\u00adnates from a sol\u00adid technical\/engineering\/environmental back\u00adground, the CSR role is a hybrid that draws a lot from the world of com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion and mar\u00adket\u00ading, insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal rela\u00adtions and orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion.
\nThe most inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive com\u00adpa\u00adnies, in this sense it seems they are work\u00ading for the con\u00adsti\u00adtu\u00adtion of a new busi\u00adness func\u00adtion, the ESG Man\u00adage\u00adment<\/strong> that seems to rep\u00adre\u00adsent a right syn\u00adthe\u00adsis between the two roles, a hybridiza\u00adtion between hard and soft skills that must increas\u00ading\u00adly trav\u00adel togeth\u00ader to be able to guide strate\u00adgic choic\u00ades for the gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion of val\u00adue in the medium\/long term.<\/p>\n

To con\u00adclude, we are con\u00advinced that the tran\u00adsi\u00adtion we are expe\u00adri\u00adenc\u00ading is an unprece\u00addent\u00aded oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty<\/strong>. The world is see\u00ading a par\u00ada\u00addigm shift. Busi\u00adness\u00ades and orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions are increas\u00ading\u00adly aware of the need to launch a new devel\u00adop\u00adment cycle that is much more eco\u00adnom\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, social\u00adly and envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly sus\u00adtain\u00adable. The ESG prin\u00adci\u00adples go hand in hand with the already known Key finan\u00adcial indi\u00adca\u00adtors to mea\u00adsure the effec\u00adtive\u00adness of a com\u00adpa\u00adny and of invest\u00ading in a com\u00adpa\u00adny: the time of short-term oper\u00ada\u00adtions seems to be over, and com\u00adpa\u00adnies must have time to imple\u00adment indus\u00adtri\u00adal plans aimed at cre\u00adat\u00ading val\u00adue by plac\u00ading human cap\u00adi\u00adtal at the cen\u00adtre, mak\u00ading the most of peo\u00adple and skills.
\nSus\u00adtain\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty is not the future, but the present to be built and pro\u00adtect\u00aded for the future<\/strong>. A future that peo\u00adple, com\u00adpa\u00adnies, insti\u00adtu\u00adtions must com\u00admit to real\u00adize every day to con\u00adtribute to the evo\u00adlu\u00adtion of the sys\u00adtem.
